Fluoride Application by gels/foam is a highly concentrated form of fluoride which is applied to the tooth’s surface. It is not a permanent treatment but due to its adherent nature, it is able to stay in contact with the tooth surface for several hours. It may be applied to the enamel, dentin or cementum of the tooth and can be used to help prevent decay, remineralize the tooth surface and to treat dentin hypersensitivity.
The dentist or hygienist cleans the teeth to remove plaque and tartar.
Gels or Foams: Applied using a tray that fits over the teeth, usually left in place for a few minutes.
Varnishes: Painted directly onto the tooth surfaces with a small brush and left to set.
Patients are usually advised not to eat or drink for 30 minutes after treatment to allow the fluoride to fully absorb into the enamel.
Strengthens Tooth Enamel: Helps make teeth more resistant to acid attacks from plaque bacteria and sugars in the mouth.
Remineralizes Teeth: Aids in repairing early stages of tooth decay before it becomes visible or causes pain.
Reduces Cavities: Regular fluoride application can significantly reduce the risk of cavities in both children and adults.
